The herb is also used for bubonics , abdominal discomfort, menstrual problems, depression, and as supportive therapy in chemotherapy.

SILIBUM MARIANUM IS ONE OF THE BEST HERBS FOR THE LIVER
Silybum marianum acts as a detoxifying agent on the liver, both preventive and therapeutic, and can be used to treat acute and subacute inflammation of the liver. The plant is primarily used for treatment of hepatitis and jaundice, as well as conditions in which the liver is under stress. This is stress caused by either an infection, a burden, environmental hazards, excessive alcohol intake, medicine poisoning or chemotherapy for cancer. Silybum marianum can both repair the damage that the liver is exposed to in chemotherapy, and contribute during the reconvalence after the treatment.

Silybum marianum extract protects the liver cells both directly and indirectly. The extract also possesses the ability to regenerate liver cells that have been damaged and protect against fibrosis (connective tissue conversion). The silibinin drug, directly supports the liver cells by binding to the outside of the cells and blocking the entry of several toxins. In addition, Silibinin protects the liver cells by enhancing their antioxidant activity. Silibinin has been shown to have a protective effect on the pancreas against alloxan, a drug that normally causes diabetes.

Silibum marianum is now recognized as a powerful antioxidant and the antioxidant of silymarin  is 10 times more powerful than vitamin E.
